About the LARE Section E Workshop
The LARE Section E Workshop is designed to greatly improve your chances of passing Section E, Grading, Drainage and Stormwater Management. It does this by focusing on the two key proficiencies you need to pass:
1. Subject Matter Mastery. That is, mastery of core grading and drainage KSAs (knowledge, skills and abilities). To pass Section E, you must have a thorough technical knowledge of grading and drainage. To address this need, the workshop is structured as a short course in grading and drainage, but with a difference: It is focused specifically on the unique nature of the exam. Exercises, with solutions, are used to reinforce the learning experience (solutions are provided for all exercises and vignettes).
2. Test-taking Experience. The three essential aspects to test taking are:
§ Familiarity with the basic form of the exam. The LARE differs from the practice of real world grading design in a couple of significant ways. First, any resemblance to the practice of real-world grading and drainage is superficial - the problems tend to be contrived and artificial. Second, the time allotted to complete each vignette (approximately 1-1⁄4 hours per vignette - four vignettes in five-hours) is considerably less than would be customary in an office practice setting, yet the solutions must be taken to a point that is well beyond schematic.
§ Familiarity with the basic vignette types (e.g., topographic/watershed, vision cone, plan and profile, horseshoe swale, etc.). The most effective way to attain adequate test-taking experience and exam type familiarity is through exposure to sample vignettes that closely resemble the actual exam in scope and rigor. To provide the most realistic possible exposure, the workshop features approximately 20 vignettes that match the actual exam and span the gamut of vignette types. In fact, the majority of these practice vignettes closely match those used in previous exam administrations.
§ Stamina. You must be able to concentrate at the highest level for five-hours without benefit of a break. Although the ability to concentrate varies from individual to individual, you will benefit from exposure to conditions that closely replicate actual test taking in terms of time constraints and rigor.
Your workshop instructor is Jerry Hastings, ASLA. Jerry has been helping candidates prepare for the licensing exam for over 25 years through the presentation of various workshops and reviews. From their inception, these classes have featured a strong focus on subject matter mastery and test-taking experience - an approach has proven to be highly effective in preparing examinees to pass the LARE.
Pre-workshop Materials. To get the workshop off to a running start, you will need to download three PDF files off an easy to access FTP site. The documents are: 1) Introduction to LARE Section E, 2) Optional Warm-up Assignment, and 3) Grading Primer. To download these three documents, you will need access to a computer, Adobe's PDF reader software, and an inkjet or laser printer. Contact Deanna at
